It’s second against third as Derry City host Shamrock Rovers tonight.
Derry City started new season much better than predicted by many (me included) and played extremely well so far. After 2-1 defeat to Finn Harps in the first round they managed to win their next four league games and to take a point away to Dundalk last week. However, they had some luck and scored two winning goals deep in injury time against Galway at home and Wexford Youths away. Furthermore they will be without two regular midfielders tonight, Conor McCormack who is suspended and Gareth McGlynn who is injured.
Rovers for their part are missing a few players too. Dean Clarke, Gary Shaw & Luke Byrne are injured whilst young Trevor Clarke is ill. Byrne is absent from the beginning of the season, while the other three are not key players and Rovers have good covers in their positions. On the up side Rovers will have two important players back and available for selection once again, striker Danny North who missed last weeks’ 2- 0 win over Galway and experienced midfielder Stephen McPhail who has recovered after long term injury. Rovers are well organized at the back and difficult to break down, especially if they take the lead. It will be difficult for Derry to hurt them too much as Derry will probably start with Rory Patterson as their only player upfront.
1-0 or 2-0 Rovers, I hope.
