Drogheda come into this game after 1-0 away win in the league against Bray last Saturday followed by 1-0 midweek league cup loss to Shelbourne at home. Despite conceding just one goal in two games they were very shaky at the back allowing both Bray and Shels several good chances. Let’s not forget that Bray have one of the weakest squad in the Premier Division, while First Division side Shelbourne had several players absent. Any similar performance will be punished tonight, I think, as Sligo have one of the best attacking line in the league.
Sligo were unlucky not to win their first league game against strong Cork City at home with Cork equalizing in the final minute of the stoppage time. Sligo then progressed in the next round of League Cup by beating Mayo League 8-0 at home. In doing so they were able to rest their top players. Sligo were impressive in their preseason games winning all six games they played, scoring 31 and conceding just 3. In fairness they played only First Division and some amateur teams, but those early signs are more than encouraging.
There is sizable gap in terms of quality in Sligo’s favor. Their midfield is so much better with players like Cawley, Russell and Puri and I think they’ll control this game right from the off. The odds have been set correctly I think.
