New season kicks off tonight and current champions Dundalk will host newly promoted Longford Town.
Dundalks’ manager Stephen Kenny kept the bulk of his squad for 2015 and added shrewdly with the signings of Ronan Finn (Shamrock Rvs), Jake Kelly (Bray) Gary Rogers (Sligo) and Paddy Barrett (Galway) to name a few as the side look to replicate their form from 2014. But their top scorer from the last two seasons Patrick Hoban moved to Oxford and that will be their biggest loss comparing to last year. Hoban scored 20 league goals last season and 17 on the 2013 season in which Dundalk finished second to St Pats and they failed to sign anyone to replace him. David McMillan and Kurtis Byrne are solid strikers, but not as good as Hoban, so Dundalk might struggle to find the goals this year.
Longford were promoted last year following a seven-year stint in the First Division. Their squad has many players with Premier Division experience and I believe they’ll have a good chance to avoid relegation. Six different players have scored 15 goals in six pre-season games, so offensively they’ve already showed some good form. A large contingent of away fans is expected and there should be a good atmosphere at the game.
Longford are clear of injuries and with no suspensions, Dundalk are missing Darren Mennan, who is suspended, Stephen O’Donnell and Dane Massey are ruled out through injuries.
