I’m taking this very early as Interwetten have their odds held way above the industry average. The current average for the home win is 1.59 with a small variance on that and Interwetten price it at 1.7.
There are obvious reasons why Newcastle are favourites here. They have been impressive in recent outings, with a combative midfield and an in form striker in Carroll. Blackpool, on the other hand, have not been terrible winning at Wigan and holding Fulham. However, they have also showed a lack of experience at this level. Against Fulham last weekend they were 2-1 up with 5 minutes to go and still managed to get caught on the counter. Away from home they will still try to play football and so seem unable to hold a tight and compact shape to defend from. Last season in the championship they conceded 58 goals, the most of all top 8 teams, and they lost 4-1 away to Newcastle. I expect we will see similar defensive naivety this weekend.

Birmingham have an impressive home record and have only lost 2 of their last 20 home games. On top of this there record last season at home against the top 4 was 4 draws so they know how to play against the top sides and be difficult to beat. Liverpool have a poor recent away record winning just 5 of the last 20 away games and even more recently only 1 in the last 5 away games.
As well as the stats we have the fact that Birmingham have made some good signings at the end of the transfer window with Hleb coming in from Barcelona, Jean Beausejour and Martin Jiranek. The signing of Hleb has also given the players and the fans a massive lift.
Liverpool still have to make do without the creativity of J Cole as he is still suspended and Kuyt will also be missing as he injured himself in training for Holland.
Birmingham have no significant injuries yet but there is the possibility this could change with the internationals coming up but the same can be said of Liverpool and thats why I'm prepared to take this early.
